Can cats eat sugar?

Avoid

Cats can't taste it — it only adds sugar.

Don't.

Why

Cats lack sweet receptors, so sugar doesn't even improve taste for them — it only raises obesity and diabetes risk.

If your cat has a condition

  • Kidney disease Avoid Lower than the 2,000 mg/1000kcal kidney-diet line. Phosphorus 0 mg/1000kcal
  • Diabetes Avoid Mostly sugar or starch — skip it for diabetic cats. Carbs 100% of calories
  • Heart disease (HCM) Avoid Low in salt. Sodium 3 mg/1000kcal
  • Urinary stones Avoid No specific stone concern known — water intake matters more.
