Can cats eat dried anchovies?

Avoid

Human dried anchovies are very high in salt and phosphorus — especially avoid with kidney or heart disease.

Not the human kind; at most one or two unsalted pet anchovies.

Why

Dried anchovies have about 1,450 mg sodium and 1,560 mg phosphorus per 100 g. Eaten bones-and-all, they're also rich in calcium and magnesium — not great for stone-prone cats. Even unsalted pet anchovies: one or two only.

If your cat has a condition

  • Kidney disease Avoid Above the 2,000 mg/1000kcal kidney-diet line — keep it small. Phosphorus 5,045 mg/1000kcal
  • Diabetes Avoid Low in carbohydrate. Carbs 1% of calories
  • Heart disease (HCM) Avoid Salty — avoid with heart disease. Sodium 4,694 mg/1000kcal
  • Urinary stones Avoid High in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus — avoid with a stone history.
