Can cats eat dog food?

Avoid

A bite is harmless, but as a diet it lacks taurine and vitamin A for cats.

In multi-pet homes, feed separately.

Why

Cats must get taurine, arachidonic acid and preformed vitamin A from food and need more protein than dogs. Dog food isn't formulated to those levels, so long-term feeding risks heart (dilated cardiomyopathy) and eye (retinal) disease.

If your cat has a condition

  • Kidney disease Avoid No specific data — follow the overall verdict.
  • Diabetes Avoid No specific data — follow the overall verdict.
  • Heart disease (HCM) Avoid No specific data — follow the overall verdict.
  • Urinary stones Avoid No specific stone concern known — water intake matters more.
