Can cats eat chocolate?

Dangerous

The darker, the more dangerous — about 10 g of dark chocolate causes signs in a 4 kg cat.

If your cat ate it

Signs
Vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, racing heart, tremors, seizures, increased thirst
When
Within 6–12 hours
What to do now
Note the amount and type (dark, milk, cocoa) and go to a vet; inducing vomiting works best within 2 hours.

Don't.

Why

Theobromine and caffeine are broken down very slowly by cats and overstimulate the heart and nerves. Signs can start around 20 mg theobromine per kg, heart effects around 40 mg/kg and seizures around 60 mg/kg. Dark chocolate has 5–16 mg per gram, so about 10 g can affect a 4 kg cat. Cats can't taste sweetness so they rarely seek it out, but licking cocoa powder or chocolate milk happens.

If your cat has a condition

Dangerous for every cat, with or without a health condition.

FAQ

My cat licked a piece of milk chocolate.

Milk chocolate has about 2 mg theobromine per gram, so a lick is unlikely to cause signs. Still watch heart rate and vomiting for 12 hours.
