Can cats eat carrot?

A little

Cooked, a few thin slices — cats can't turn carrot into vitamin A.

How much

Up to per day 10g about 3 pieces · 1 thin slice ≈ 3 g

4 kg adult cat, treats ≤10% of ~200 kcal/day

PreparationCooked, thinly sliced.

Why

People convert carrot beta-carotene to vitamin A; cats lack the enzyme, so there's no 'good for the eyes' benefit. Raw pieces are hard and can choke.

If your cat has a condition

  • Kidney disease OK to give Lower than the 2,000 mg/1000kcal kidney-diet line. Phosphorus 1,355 mg/1000kcal
  • Diabetes OK to give At this portion it is only 0.7 g of carbohydrate. Carbs 91% of calories
  • Heart disease (HCM) OK to give Low in salt. Sodium 742 mg/1000kcal
  • Urinary stones OK to give No specific stone concern known — water intake matters more.
